Curation is generally defined “the process of analyzing and sorting content and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme.” The role of a curator can vary by institution but centers on the organization of objects and exhibitions for educational purposes. Far too often, curatorial roles are viewed as siloed forms of production where a single authoritarian voice speaks for a collection and its value. Designed to counter this dominant narrative, Collaborative Curation in the Digital Age is geared towards museums studies, fine art, humanities, and art history majors. This course focuses on the ways that web-based collaboration can inform and aid curatorial practice. Partnerships across museum departments and outside of institutional walls offer opportunities for participatory involvement and inclusive exhibition development. Through specialized assignments geared at promoting interdisciplinary frameworks and open-source digital resources, students will broaden and deepen their understanding and application of curatorial work and scholarship.
